Odin

AKA: All-Father

First appearance: Journey Into Mystery 85

Powers: Odin's a god, meaning he can do just about anything he darn well pleases. That includes opening dimensional portals, casting energy bolts, creating three-dimensional illusions, and disciplining unruly offspring by turning them into humans. The tremendous amount of energy he expends is replenished during the yearly Odinsleep, during which he is extremely vulnerable to attack -- especially from his ambitious son, Loki.

History: The early history of Odin is vague and contradictory. What is certain is that he and his two brothers founded the dimension called Asgard eons ago. When they fought the frost giants on Asgard's borders, his brothers sacrificed themselves to trap the giants, leaving Odin in charge of Asgard. Odin sired a son, Thor, by the personification of the planet Earth, Gaea. Thor splits his time between Asgard and Earth, and has often argued with his father over the importance of humans in the grand scheme of things. Odin's other son is Loki, the adopted (but diminutive) frost giant who, like Thor, has never quite figured out how to gain his stern father's approval (and, since Loki's inclined to do things like transplant his own spirit into Odin's body, he isn't likely to get it anytime soon). The quarrels between Odin's two sons are legion and epic, and often require the intervention of their father. After a battle with Surtur, Odin was captured by Seth, and held prisoner for some time before being freed by Thor. When Asgard was destroyed by frost giants and trolls, Odin saved his people by converting them into mortals and hiding them on Earth.

Current status: Odin and the Asgardians (except Thor) are missing. A mega-crossover with multiple variant covers will likely be required to find them again.
