Featuring the following heroine!

Captain Marvel

Real name: Monica Rambeau
AKA: Photon

Favorite quote: "An Avenger--me? But I've had my powers only a few weeks!" (Avengers 227. An unassuming, regular gal from New Orleans suddenly finds herself invited to join Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Little did she dream that she'd wind up becoming a mainstay of the team and, eventually, leading it).

Team affiliation: As Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau led the Avengers until near-fatal injuries sidelined her indefinitely. She has since almost fully recovered but is now only an occasional Avengers reservist. Her failure to resume her active membership, let alone her leadership role, is a puzzler best attributed to editorial whims.

Powers: Accidental exposure to an experimental dimensional aperture in the line of duty gave Harbor Patrol Captain Monica Rambeau the ability to transform herself into any form of electromagnetic energy, making her one of the most powerful women on Earth. She could convert her body to light, heat, microwaves, hard radiation, neutrinos, holographic images, a laser beam and many other forms, assuming the speed, composition and properties of each while preserving her human consciousness. Later,
her near-fatal accident first deprived her of her powers and then radically altered them, but she seems to possess a facsimile of her original abilities again. Depending on which text you read, though, she now either assumes energy forms or surrounds herself in auras of those energies. Her most recent appearance seems to indicate the former. Chalk the waffling and musical powers up to comics' chronic fear of powerful female
characters.

Favorite storyline: Avengers 250, in which Monica finally overcomes her insecurities for good and comes to terms with the weighty legacy of the Captain Marvel name she inherited from the late, great alien Avenger, Mar-Vell.

Least favorite storyline: The Walt Simonson run on the Avengers was an artistically competent but pointlessly destructive rampage that pretty much wrecked the book -- including the senseless, sudden and savage writing-out of Monica Rambeau, who hasn't appeared regularly anywhere since.
Even more stomach-turning, though, was an issue of Avengers Unplugged (a bad comic at the best of times) in which Monica forfeits her hard-won Captain Marvel title to Mar-Vell's no-account punk offspring, Genis. Y'see, the Controller co-opts her brain and, after forcing her to kiss his ugly mug as a test of his power (real classy), sends her after Genis. Though smarter, more experienced and much more powerful than the kid, she barely manages a stalemate despite disrobing to gain a tactical advantage (even classier!); then, once her mind's freed, the Controller's vanquished and all is right with the world, a presumably still brain-fried Monica volunteers to give up that silly ol' Captain Marvel name since Genis the Boy Wonder has familial rights to it. She then assumes the less resonant and somewhat inaccurate alias of Photon and flies back into obscurity. Whose bright idea was this?
